.... environmentally friendly holidays!

reduce, re-use, recycle, respect...

Whilst some people have criticised our commitment to this issue, we believe that every individual has a moral responsibility to reduce their impact on our environment & our campsite policies reflect this. We have been recycling since 1999, swapped our lightbulbs for low-energy ones, put hippos in our cisterns, save excess clean water to use elsewhere, use environmentally-friendly or recycled products & set up composting facilities. We continue to explore other ideas & products. Please help by being a responsible visitor & consider following the ideas & suggestions below during your stay:

waste
✓ Most importantly, follow the campsite guidelines for recycling & composting
✓ Wash tins, jars etc at the end of washing up, using the same water
✓ Avoid over-packaged goods. Plastic trays & tetrapacks cannot be recycled here yet
✓ Take a shopping bag to the supermarket, or re-use your plastic ones
✓ Do not bring, or use, disposable cutlery or crockery
✓ Buy quality goods that can be re-used or repaired; eg: BBQs & windbreaks
✓ Choose re-chargeable batteries
✓ Take home unwanted or broken large bulky items; eg: chairs, tables, windbreaks, inflatable beds etc
✓ No disposable BBQs. They cannot be recycled
✓ Burn only lumpwood charcoal which can be composted
✓ Offer left-over food & magazines to other campers when you leave
✓ Read & replace tourist information leaflets back in the rack
✓ Use fat traps for cooking oil & fat

water
✓ Do not leave taps running unnecessarily whilst cleaning teeth or washing your hands
✓ Take a short shower
✓ Rinse dishes & vegetables in a bowl
✓ Don’t overfill your water carriers
✓ Excess clean water can be poured into the water butt for use in the garden rather than throwing it away

electricity
✓ Please switch off the water heater after use
✓ Turn off lights in buildings when no-one is using them
✓ Bring only essential gear that needs recharging or buy solar chargers & wind-up gadgets; (torches & lanterns etc)
✓ Try not to leave items charging for longer than necessary
  1. ✓ Generators are not allowed on site

chemicals
✓We have no chemical disposal point so please do not bring, or use, portable toilets
✓Respect our septic tank & do not put any chemicals down the drains or toilets
✓Please use biodegradable products if at all possible

fuel
✓ Instead of using gas, why not try the ‘Greenheat’ fuel, based on plant extracts?
✓ Gas cannisters must be placed in the appropriate bin for safe disposal & not thrown into the general rubbish
✓ Please take half-used cannisters home with you
✓ Share a car with others where possible. A blackboard for car-share offers is in the barn
✓ Please avoid driving to the toilet block or to other people’s tents!

environment
✓ Respect the Countryside Code
✓ Clear your pitch on leaving of all litter, including cigarette butts
✓ Nappies, condoms, dressings etc, should all be double-bagged & placed in the bin
✓ Do not throw dog waste into the general bin, but use the bin provided
✓ Access to conservation area during daylight hours only, so you don’t frighten the badgers!
✓ Don’t throw cigarettes onto the ground, but use one of our little tins as an ashtray
